The truth is, the "West" is a human invention intended to suppress the minds of peoples and cultures not allocated in this "geographical" space. Racist scholars have successfully caused people to think that anything associated with "change" and "new ideas about culture" = influence from the "West," despite the fact that cultures around the world have always changed and been in a state of flux. "Innovation" is considered authentic to the "West" while in other places it is considered to be "not true to the Africa/Asian/non-Western mind" or losing one's culture. We must break free of this construct.

e-books are not such a wild idea for africa, in fact, in many ways they make lots of sense. aid groups spend lots of money building libraries - when e-books would make much more sense. they are much more durable and less sensitive to dust and heat than laptops, and can hold a whole library. by all logic, cell phones - africa has some of the highest connection costs in the world - should not have taken off in africa but they clearly have and africa leads the world in cell phone use (or soon will). e-books could clearly take off in africa - certainly more practical than laptops, which cannot endure the village environment. the first post about english and french is out of date. more and more africans are literate in french and english - millions are already. translation to local languages is possible but largely impractical, truth be told. there just are not enough of those translators available, as far as i know. tv and radio are much more popular media in africa but books impart knowledge effectively, less costly in some ways and encourage literacy, which is fundamental to human understanding and development. my two cents.

I know many would prefer to hear the old stats and not believe that certain parts of Africa are actually not so poor. and even doing well. I'm sorry but the above is just tripe. Libya was a negative on Sub-Saharan Africa. From coups inspired and backed by Gaddaffi to Libyan rebels killing black Africans.

This is a narrow-minded and tired argument. It seems to suggest, for example, that rural farmers in developing countries first master the use of the telegraph before trying to use modern cellular telecommunications technology. As it happens, they are already routinely using this technology to conduct financial transactions, obtain real-time commodity pricing, shop for inputs, etc., quite successfully, applications that are are mostly unheard of by their counterparts in developed countries. All done by leapfrogging the telegraph, telex, land-line telephones, etc.

Sometimes I think that entrepreneurship can be taught. Most people think you need so much in order to get things done. I remember a friend of mine attending a class and coming out inspired and challenged. He tried starting a sandwich bar - which later flopped because he didn't know how to make good sandwiches - but the main thing is he tried.

How can there even be talk about books or e-books in Africa without acknowledging such a glaring contradiction....most books in Africa are only available in languages (english and french) that most Africans don't speak (or certainly not sufficiently literate in)!
